  4. Country Description:  Iceland is a highly developed stable democracy with a
  5. modern economy.  Tourist facilities are widely available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A tourist or business visa is
  8. not required for stays up to three months (the 90-day period begins when
  9. entering the Nordic area: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland).  For
  10. further information concerning entry requirements for Iceland, travelers can
  11. contact the Embassy of Iceland at 2022 Connecticut Avenue N.W., Washington,
  12. D.C. 20008, tel (202) 265-6653, or the Icelandic Consulate General in New
  13. York, Tel. (212) 686-4100.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Excellent medical facilities are available.  U.S.
  16. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers
  17. have found that in some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific
  18. overseas  coverage has proved to be useful.  Further information on health
  19. matters can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's international
  20. travelers hotline at (404) 332-4559.

  22. Crime Information:  Iceland has a low crime rate.  There is little violent
  23. crime.  There has been a recent small increase in muggings and disturbances
  24. in the Reykjavik city center, an area frequented by large numbers of
  25. adolescent youths in late evening and early morning hours, particularly on
  26. weekends.  The Reykjavik police emergency number is 11166.  The
  27. fire/ambulance emergency number in Reykjavik is 11100.   The loss or theft
  28. abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to local police and
  29. the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  Useful information on guarding
  30. valuables and protecting personal security while traveling abroad is
  31. provided in the Department of State pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad," available
  32. from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office,
  33. Washington, D.C. 20402.

  35. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  36. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, or dealing in
  37. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  38. and fines.  Driving under the influence of alcohol is considered a serious
  39. matter, and the local authorities treat it as such.

  41. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register with the Consular Section of the
  42. U.S. Embassy may obtain updated information on travel and security in Iceland.
